COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES FOR St. XAVIER'S ACADEMY
Commencement exercises at St. Xavier's Academy were held Friday evening and diplomas and awards presented to the four graduates, with Rev. Joseph Edbrick delivering the commencement address.
The graduates were Mary Thiesen, valedictorian; Mary Elizabeth Murphy, salutatorian; Jack Hillerman and James Melvin.
The honor students gave their valedictory and salutatory addresses and were presented scholarships to Our Lady of Victory College at Ft. Worth, by the Sisters of St. Mary.  Dr. Don Freeman made the presentation.  Other awards included the $10 award presented each year by the Rotary club to the Senior boy making the highest average in the last year of school, which was won by Jack Hillerman; the $50 award given by the Elks Lodge for the best essay, also went to Jack Hillerman; and the second prize of $25 went to Mary Louise Thiesen.  Patricia Thiesen won the Lt. E.G. Wagner, USN prize for having the highest average in Christian Doctrine.  
Other scholarships were given by the Knights of Columbus, St. Xavier Alumni, and Ex-Student Association, the Catholic Daughters of America, Mr. and Mrs. V.E. Campion, Mrs. B.J. Lindsay, the family of Mrs. Theresa Pastore, and one in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  These awards will be given the students by the Sisters of St. Mary according to their own system of awarding them.
The diplomas were given the graduates and 8th grade pupils by Father Erbrick.  
Eighth grade pupils are Mary Ann Bruno, Leo Hill, Jo Ann Hillerman, Ronald Ingram, J.R. Jones, Mary Kirkpatrick, Jerry LaLonde, Larry McDaniel, Nancy Newcomb, Martha Pierce, Ann Preston, Billy Jack Thomas, and Norman Leyh.  Student final certificates in the Palmer method of business writing were presented to Mary Ann Bruno, Leo Hill, Jo Ann Hillerman, Mary Kirkpatrick, Larry McDaniel, Martha Lois Pierce and Ann Preston.
The program prefacing the awarding of diplomas and prizes included the singing of "Panis Angelicus" by the school chorus; piano numbers by Genevieve Anderson, Ann Lindsay, Jane Wilson and Jacqueline Lemoine, and a selection by the boys vocal ensemble.
