DENISON 60-50-35 YEARS AGO
By Dulce Murray

June 21, 1888
The recitation hall of St. Xavier's academy was crowded last night, to its utmost capacity, by friends and patrons of this popular institution of learning, to witness the closing exercises.  A small but exquisitely designed stage occupied one end of the hall and as strains of the grand march pealed from organ and piano, the pupils of the school, dressed in immaculate white, marched onto the stage, taking their position ready for the opening hymn.
The opening hymn was followed by the salutatory, delivered by Miss Kittie Mimnaugh.  Then followed by duets, little choruses by the juniors, the address to parents, by the smaller pupils, vocal solo by one of the seniors was followed by "An Essay on Cheek."  The chorus "Concert of the Nightingale and Cuckoo" was rendered by 15 young ladies of the senior class.  "Toad's Temptation," a miniature character sketch participated in by about 10 of the juniors, followed and filled the auditorium with raptures of applause.  Dame Duck's Lecture, a similar sketch, to the one already noticed, was one of the most laughable, given by the little children.  A selection of operatic gems followed, also other essays, and musical numbers, drills, and humorous skits.
At the conclusion of the exercises, the gold medals of the academy were presented by Father Logue to the following graduates:
Miss Lillie  McGillicuddy, of Whitesboro
Lillie Scanlon, of Corsicana
Miss Bary Broll,  Kittie Mimnaugh, and Minnie Lasher, of Denison
Miss McGIllicuddy delivered the valedictory, which brought to a close the school term of 1887-1888.
