Sherman, Texas

In 1869 the Reverend William Pitts Petty came to Sherman as Pastor of the Travis Street Methodist Church.  He started a private school on the back of the Church lot.  Among his pupils were Cal Eubank, H. L. Ha.., Colonel Luther Hare of Austin, Tom Randolph, Hon. Joe Cockrell of Dallas, W. J. Walsh, Frank Vaden, and Ches. Dorchester.  Petty's School was a whole generation ahead in teaching method.
