Memories of Hyde Park School

It had to have been torn down sometime after 1956 because:

My cousin, Ronnie Monroe, attended first grade there in 1955-1956.  He and I were 3 months apart in age; because he was in their school district he was able to begin even though he didn't turn 6 until after September 1.  My mom has shared a few details about the school; she's not sure when it closed but definitely after May 1956.  My cousin's family was just down the road, east on Coffin.

Mother, Bessie Dalton said

Hyde Park School was on Coffin St., almost where Wesley Village is now, only on the North side of the St. They did their own cooking, had a huge coal stove, and a one room school house.
I remember 3 things;

1.  My cousin Ronnie was the youngest and so cute and energetic.  The older kids talked him into trying to fly from the roof of either the school or a small building nearby - possibly an outhouse?  He broke his arm in the fall.

2.  The older kids also told him that the Ex-Lax they had was candy and gave him some to eat.

3.  My cousin, his mother, Jessie Monroe, my mom, and I went to the 1955 Christmas party there.  I was excited to be in a school - I really wanted to be a first grader too.  We were all sitting at student desks and Santa was up front with a big sack.  He called each student's name, one at a time, to come forward and get their Christmas present.  It was a net stocking with a few nuts, an orange, and a peppermint stick.  This was a typical Christmas gift at schools then and the orange was special as we didn't have oranges all the time.  Suddenly Santa called my name.  I thought it was magical that he knew I was there.  I ran up to get my stocking.  As I was walking back to my chair, the bottom fell out of the stocking and all the goodies fell to the floor.  Everyone started laughing and I started crying.  I ran to my mom and she said, "why are you crying? They're not laughing at you, they're laughing with you."  I said, "But I'm not laughing.."  I was so embarrassed.
