Formerly home of Dr. G.L. Harshaw and the place of his Denison Literary Academy.  In 1902, home of Dr. J.P.S. Powell, Vice-President of Gate City Literary and Commercial Academy (Harshaw Academy), Denison, Texas.  Dr. Powell offered "first-class boarding accomodations to students, at customary rates.  He is an experienced physician, a W.O.W., and a Christian gentleman."

Harshaw Academy, also known as the Gate City Academy, was established at the turn of the century and was located at 900-902 West Main in Denison.

Professor G. L. Harshaw, the entrepreneur of the school, represented the classic old school and transmitted solid dedication to his students.

This prosperous progressive and popular institution is presided over by Prof. G. L. Harshaw, a live, wide-awake teacher of more than twenty years experience, a superior instructor, and a fine disciplinarian. His work is thorough, recent and practical, and his rates of tuition very reasonable.


L. R. Powell came in 1902 from Mississippi to serve as vice-president and head of the academic department.  He specialized in history, math, natural science, English, pedagogy, Latin and Greek.

Tuition per month was as follows
  • Literary branches, $1.25 to $4
  • Bookkeeping, $5
  • Shorthand, $5
  • Shorthand and Typing, $6

There was a discount of 10% for two or more students from the same family.
