815 W. Florence st.
Denison, Texas

The Cotton Mill School in extreme south Denison began in a small one-room structure at 800 West Florence Street.  Children of cotton mill workers went to this school.  In 1906, the community celebrated its all-new school house, built next door to the original building which was then torn down.  The school house served the community for fourteen years, when a new two-story brick building was built to the left and a few yards further back from the street.  On opening day in September 1922, the new school received its new name, Golden Rule, by which it is still known.

The lumber from the old Cotton Mill School was removed and used in building a small structure on South Woodlawn Boulevard, known as Brownsville School, serving African Americans for over four decades.  There was enough lumber left over to build the Bois D'Arc Baptist Church in Dubois - - - Billy Holcomb

In 1948, two rooms were added on the north side of the building.  In 1952, a new cafeteria was built on the south end of the building.

As of 1955 the Golden Rule School, though located in Denison city limits, wasn't a part of Denison ISD.  The 1955 Denison City Directory listed the address of Golden Rule School as 815 W. Florence Street.
