It is uncertain as to the actual date that the Desert School began operation. By 1910 there are pictures of the school in Desert. It was located north of the Desert store. At times the school went to the eighth grade and other times it went through high school.

Asa Walker donated property about one-half mile southeast of the store on which to build a new school. The last school at Desert was named the Asa Walker School and went through the eighth grade. It closed in 1955.

Students from Desert attended school at Trenton, Blue Ridge, Whitewright or Westminster. Through the years, some of the teachers at Desert School, who also attended the Crossroads Church were:
  • Bernice Caraway
  • Byron Caraway
  • Lota Frazier
  • Joe Gordon
  • Ancil Gordon
  • Mae Holcomb
  • Cynthia Hughes
  • Shannon Lands
  • Ethel Pace
  • Lester Pace
  • Dale Salzman
  • Charles Thompson
  • Gerry Thompson

Miss Fay Cameron went to Desert Sunday where she began teaching music in the Desert High School.  She has a large class.

Upon invitation Supt. Chas. J. Denton went to Desert Monday morning to assist in the opening of the High School there.  Desert has just completed a modern 2-story school building at a cost of over $4,000.  The money to build was raised by a bond issue.  The building has an auditorium with a seating capacity of 300.  Desert has a school that its patrons can well be proud of.  Mr. Denton reported a large attendance on opening day, with about 200 visitors present to witness the opening of the first term in the new building.
