Photo of Years Ago Recalls Belles of the 90s

Van Alstyne, Texas Aug. 27-- Van Alstyne has had its share of the belles of the gay nineties, as the picture above well shows. The above group posed for the picture May 2, 1892, forty-two years ago. The music class of Old Columbia College was well known and called one of the best of girl orchestras in this section. Old Columbia College was located one block north of the present school and was a popular school in its days.
In the front row of the above picture are, left to right; Inez Slaughter who later became Mrs. A.B. Weiner and now deceased; Dixie Umphris, now Mrs. Lester Henderson, Dallas; Maud Umphress, now Mrs. Spencer Taylor, Van Alstyne; and Sallie Carter, now Mrs. Lyman Umphress, Van Alstyne.
In the second row are Minnie Golden, now Mrs. J.A. Elliott, McKinney; and Annie McKinney now Mrs. Gus W. Thomason, Dallas.
The third row are Berta Garver, now Mrs. S.A. Trube, Austin; Flora Howle, now Mrs. Lee Veaney, Van Alstyne; Una Mount, now Mrs. Una Lockett, Van Alstyne; Pearl Cannon, now Mrs. Walter Barron, Van Alstyne; and Ruth McKinney, now Mrs. John Niell, Van Alstyne.
In the back row are Birdie Maddox, Nannie Luters, now Mrs. Tobe Huches, Bokchito, Okla; Frankie Chenoweth, the music teacher; Sallie Greer and Mabel Roff, now deceased.

The original (the names were handwritten on the back, but are very faded).
Since the story originated in Van Alstyne according to the lead from the article,
I believe my great aunt,
Una Mount, was responsible for this being published.
