William Lawson Holder came to Grayson County, Texas from Alabama about 1845. He settled about four miles west of Denison.  William Lawson Holder and his sons built the first school in the area.
Pioneers, who were camped near a spring on the property of William S. Reeves (1794-1879) while waiting for their land grants, built this one-room schoolhouse about 1855. The leader of the group was William L. Holder (1820-1876), who migrated to Grayson County from Missouri.  His son Clinton Lafayette (1845-1897) later used the cabin as a residence.
In 1974 the structure was moved onto Preston Bend Road, north of Highway 120 and used for a residence.  It was donated to the village by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sory of Sherman and was restored.   The building was awarded a Texas Historical Medallion in 1977.

There are two windows in the school, covered with oiled paper, that don't let in much light.  The wooden shutters were left open to let in light and air during the warm months, but when the cold winter came, the shutters were closed and locked to keep out as much of the cold weather and rain as possible.  These would also be shut and latched by the teacher at the end of the school day.
Students played games and socialized outside the one-room school building.  The school would have a large bell with a rope attached to it to be used to ring the bell, or the teacher would stand at the door and ring a hand bell after recess. The school bell was also used when it was time for school to commence each morning.
In early American schools, the schools were furnished with long benches made from split logs, hand-made by the parents of the school children; these logs were sometimes called "puncheon".  The logs were rough; and with students sitting on the curved side of a short log, any movement could easily topple the bench and the children over.
