Bethel School District #6 was located three miles south of Whitewright.  The school building was built about 1870.  The name, Bethel, came from the Bible. Genesis 28:12 reads where Jacob dreamed and "Behold a ladder and angels of God ascending and descending on it."

J. P. & Annie B. Autrey donated the plot for the church and a school.  During the 1934-1935 school term, there were two teachers and seventy students. Bethel school was consolidated with Whitewright in the mid 1940s. The school house became a part of the church and the Bethel Cemetery is just south of the church.
