BUILDING BURNED AT AUSTIN COLLEGE
Main Structure of That Institution Completely Destroyed by Fire - Work of the School Will Go On

Sherman, January 21 - The main building of Austin College was completely destroyed by fire at 8:30 o'clock tonight.  The origin of the fire is a complete mystery.
Flames were first noticed to shoot out of the southeast corner of the building, and they spread so rapidly that the destruction was complete.  Dr. T.S. Clyce, president of the college, says the very lowest estimate of the loss is $75,000, perhaps considerably more, with only partial insurance.
Austiun College was established in 1849 in Huntsville and was moved to Sherman in 1876.  The main school building was undergoing additions and repairs which were almost completed.
Dr. Clyce says the school work will not be interfered with in the least and that recitations will go ahead in temporary quarters without interruption.  The enrollment at Austin College is about 200 and members of the alumni are scattered throughout the southwest.  Dr. Clyce gave out the following statement:

"To the Alumni and Friends of Austin College:
The main building of the school, which we were remodedling and was nearing completion, was completely destroyed by fire tonight.  I cannot express my grief and sorrow.  It is a great calamity and we instinctively turn to our friends in our time of sorrow.  The building must be replaced at once.  We will arrange to go right ahead with the school work and ask our friends and patrons to stand by us."
