Woman's Christian Temperance Union

The 1899 Woman's Christian Temperan  Union convention was held in Denison at the First Methodist Church, festooned for the occasion.
Mrs. A.W. Acheson was absent from the convention so the chair was taken by the vice-president, Mrs. Sallie Trumbull.  At the roll call twenty-three women answered.  Afterwards women from local unions and those present from Texas cities were seated.
The Treasurer read a report showing the amounts paid into the treasury for executive purposes and the number of members in each local union;   The Denison union is shown in the records with the largest membership - 43.
At noon on the first day of the convention, Wednesday, Miss Francis Willard, world President of the W.C.T.U. arrived and spoke to the Texas group, which was well received with enthusiasm.  At 4:00 that day a lecture for the children was given followed by the children's presentation in song.  The meeting was adjourned for the first day.
On Wednesday evening Miss Francis Willard spoke to an audience at the McDougall Opera House.
Thursday morning the ladies reassembled at the First Methocist Church with reports consuming the forenoon.  Coming together again at 2:00 p.m. the ladies listened to a paper by Mrs. Fry of San Antonio on the matter of women's suffrage after which much discussion ensued.  The meeting for Thursday continued into the evening with a lecture fy Miss Willard and Mrs. Beauchamp of Denton on social purity to a large group.
Routine business occupied the ladies' attention on Friday morning but the afternoon was given over to a "question box" conducted by Miss Willard on the work for the coming year.  Of the four officers elected for the 1889-1890 year, two were from the Denison local group:  Mrs. A.W. Acheson, State President and Mrs. L.M. Young, Corresponding Secretary; the Recording Secretary was from Denton and the Treasurer from San Antonio.
