Sandusky Community

The Sandy Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church was one of three churches to serve the Sandusky Community in
the late 1800s. It is the only one to remain active over the years.

The church property was acquired by G. W. Scarbrough, E. L. Roberts and J. C. Carker who were elders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Sandusky in 1884.  The church building burned in 1889; another building was constructed immediately.  Seventy-three members worshipped in this church in the 1890s.  Session records show a membership of forty-five in the 1930s.  A third building was built in 1942.  The church had a membership of 75 in 1950.  The present chapel was built in 1963.
They purchased 1.5 acres of land from Texas University Land held by the Methodist Church of Gordonville.  Later they purchased more land bringing the total to 4.71 acres to be used for a church and cemetery. The cemetery has not been used for some time.

Although land was purchased by the ruling elders in 1884 and was under the care of the Guthrie Presbytery, the church was not officially organized until May 1889. The church was placed in the North Texas Presbytery a few years later and
still remains so.
