Samaria Baptist Church
Van Alstyne, Texas

With the Rev. Peter Curry officiating, the Samaria Baptist Church was organized under a brush arbor in the back yard of the Peter Barnes home, with seven charter members, on August 5, 1883.  The church….here for a time and then moved into Van Alstyne, where a lot was donated as a building site by an unknown white citizen.  A one room frame building was erected, and the church was named the Samaria Baptist Church.

The known charter members are: Rev. Peter Curry and wife; Pete and Pearl Crickett; and Samantha Orr.

1936

Constructed in 1936 this 2-room structure provided 8 grades of education for the last 3 decades of separate but equal eduction.  The property was acquired by the Samaria Baptist Church in 1966, which originally was founded on August 5, 1883 through "the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to found a Negro Baptist Church."

In 1968 the white and black schools were integrated, and the Samaria Baptist Church purchased the colored school building and with volunteer help from the white brotherhood, remodeled the building which they presently use as their place of worship.
