Dewey Ave. Church of Christ
Sherman, Texas

In the early 1850s, the Sherman Church existed in Sherman, Texas.  During the post Civil War years, the congregation met in downtown buildings.

The first building was erected at the corner of Houston and Montgomery Streets.
The second building stood until being destroyed by fire in 1999.   The Houston Street Church of Christ prospered and grew to approximately five hundred members.

In 1920, a new building was erected at the corner of Walnut and Cherry Streets.  In 1947, the Walnut St. Church of Christ had prospered and made plans to 'grow the church' by establishing two more congregations.  Due to a shortage of building supplies following World War II, an Army barracks at Camp Howze in Gainesville was purchased and moved to 619 N. Grand Ave.  The barracks was remolded and services were begun at the Grand Ave. Church of Christ.

As the membership grew, the facility was enlarged.  Once again becoming crowded, the congregation build a new church building in 1964 and became the Dewey Avenue Church of Christ.
