CHURCH CREATED FROM SCHISM
First Christian Church of Sherman was created in 1960 following a division of the membership of Central Christian Church.
Central Christian Church had has a decline in membership over a ten year period during which Sherman had a a sharp population growth.
A church split was caused by a lack of harmony, lack of Christian fellowship, lack of a leadership training program, and lack of the best utilization of the property and income.
Those discontent with the church conditions met August 7, 1960 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Nichols, and elected L.A. Seitz temporary chairman of the new group.  Harry V. Barrett, Jr. was vice president and Bill Schuacher was treasurer.
On August 11 more than 100 persons met with Dr. T.T. Swearingen, executive director of the Texas Board of Christian Churches, to establish and confirm the affliation of the church with the Brotherhood of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ).
James A. Farrar, then director of religious services at Texas Christian University was speaker for the group's first services held August 14, 1960 at Wakefield Elementary School.  Farrar was called as an interim minister, a position that lasted for seven months.

First Elders elected were Doyle Nichols, Ollie Mattion, L.A. Seitz and Tom Lethcho.  
Other officers were Mrs. Sam Williams, Mrs. John T. Nall, and Mrs. Seitz, deaconesses;
J.P. Cave, Calvin Dittemore, Finis Wood, Howard Woodson, Harry V. Barrett, Jr., Ralph Beckham, Bill Schumacher, Lt. William C. Coltman, Walter Carpenter, Joe D. Moore, Richard Silver, Ewell Wainwright, deacons;
Jean Cave and Geroge Smith, youth representatives.

Rev. Leonard Stansbury is pastor of the church which has a membership of 350 now.  Church officers are Herman Bedford, Paul Brown, Jim Unclebach, L.A. Hudson, Cal Dittemore, and L.A. Seitz, elders.
Also Clyde Bailey, Ray Boswell, Charles Byler, Ron Mailes, Kevin Smith, John Livingston, Joe Moore, George Bradley, H.L. Nichols, Dwight Beebe, W.R. Smith, Jodie Gregg, Larry Cloer, J.P. Cave and Larry D. Taylor, deacons.
Also Frances Brown, Ethyl Chism, Lorene Bradley, and Ruth Moore, deaconesses;
Janna Dittemore, Mori Dittemore, Kathy Douglas and Julia Stansbury, junior deaconesses;
Greg Brown, Randy Douglas, Randy Wessinger, Brad Moore and Mike Unclebach, junior deacons.
