Sherman - Services for Sue S. Groce of Sherman, 78-year-old retired legal secretary who died Monday, June 23, 2003 at IHS of Texoma in Sherman, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, in the Waldo Funeral Home Chapel.  Dr. Tom S. Brandon, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church in Sherman, officiated and burial followed at Friendship Cemetery.  Arrangements were under the care of Waldo Funeral Home.
Sue was born on August 2, 1924 in the Hagerman community north of Sherman, the daughter of Archie Hughes and Irene Eudy Hughes.  Her mother died when she was 3 years old and she was reared by her aunt and uncle, Clara and Carl Sneed.  She attended Plainview School, west of Sherman, graduate from Southmayd High School and later attended Austin College.  She married David Vernon Groce September 17, 1955 in Sherman.
She was employed as a legal secretary for several lawyers in Sherman, the most recent in the office of attorney Roger Sanders.  She enjoyed serving as a Sunday School teacher and in other capacities for over 30 years at the First Baptist Church; and when she was not doing an activity at church, she enjoyed reading books.
She is survived by her husband, David V. Groce, of Sherman; daughter, Cindy Groce of Durant, Oklahoma; two sisters, Laura Fay Wright and her husband, J.P., of Sherman; and Hazel Lee Vessels of Southmayd; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her aunt and  uncle that she considered to be her mother and father; and two brothers, Glen Hughes and Leonard Hughes.
Pallbearers were Tony Hansard, Tim Hansard, Joe Michael Loyd, Jimmy Loyd, Jim Burrow, Bill Vessels and Pascal Cayet.  Honorary pallbearers were Ted Groce, James Groce and Thomas Groce.
The family requests memorials to be given to the donor's charity of choice.




David Vernon Groce was born April 21, 1924 in Sherman, Texas to John Groce and Bettie (Green) Groce and passed from this life on Friday, August 24, 2012 at his home.

David is a graduate of Sherman High School. He served as a medic in the United States Army during World War II, helping treat soldiers in many capacities. David married Sue Sneed on September 17, 1955 in Sherman. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2003. David was a retired locomotive engineer for over 40 years after working for Katy, Frisco, and Burlington Railroad, and was a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union. David grew up attending Friendship United Methodist Church and was a member of the Forest Avenue Baptist Church. His hobbies were quail and pheasant hunting with his bird dogs, fishing, and took up golfing after his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lucylle Groce Wright, Frances Groce Loyd and Billie Groce Anderson; brothers, John Groce, George Groce, Claude Groce, Charles Groce, Elbert Groce, Emmett Groce, Thomas Groce and Ted Groce.
Mr. Groce is survived by his daughter, Cindy Groce of Sherman; brother, James Groce and his wife, Wanda, of Sherman; nieces and nephews: Jim Loyd, Joe Michael Loyd, John Loyd, David Loyd, Carolyn Threadgill, Michael Threadgill, Jennifer Durham, Betty Burrow, Tim Hansard, Tony Hansard, Taylor Hansard, Sarah Hansard, Ronnie Dale Crowley, Sharon Crowley, Judy Wilson, Nancy Cayet, Garrett Cayet, Claire Cayet, Guy Anderson, Chase Anderson, Priscilla Anderson, Whitney Anderson, Rebecca Anderson, Pam Ferguson, Renee Madden, Nathan Madden, Suzette Beasley, Jeff Beasley, Jason Beasley, Shannon Sardo, as well as extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life service was held at 10:00am Monday, August 27, in Waldo Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Jeff Davis and Terry Brown of Victory Life Church, Sherman, officiating. Interment followed at Friendship Cemetery with Tim Hansard, Taylor Hansard, Tony Hansard, Pascal Cayet, Guy Anderson, and Joe Michael Loyd serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Victory Life Church 3400 Texoma Parkway Sherman, Texas 75090, Friendship Cemetery Association 293 Friendship Road Sherman, Texas 75092, or Meals on Wheels of Texoma 1500 N. Broughton Sherman, Texas 75090.
Services were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home.
