SHERMAN SOLDIER KILLED IN VIETNAM
A Sherman man, PFC Monte Dale Dykes, was killed by a booby trap explosion in Vietnam while serving on the point of an infantry patrol in mid-August.  The 20-year-old infantryman had been in Vietnam only a month when he was killed, August 19, according to the U.S. Army headquarters, Dallas.  Details of the infantry patrol action were not immediately available.  PFC Dykes was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Dykes of 809 N. Ross.
He was attached to Co. B 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Division with headquarters at Chu Lai.  Young Dykes entered the Army in February of this year and left Oakland, California for Vietnam on July 18.  Receiving his infantry training at Ft. Bliss, Texas, he underwent advanced combat instruction at Ft. Ord., California.  He was home on an 18-day leave immediately prior to overseas assignment.
Born January 26, 1949 in Sherman, he attended Sherman public schools and graduated from Sherman High School in 1967.  He was employed by Texas Instruments, Dallas and Auto Parts Co., 310 W. Lamar, Sherman, before entering military service.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman.  A family spokesman said the body will be flown to the U.S. and transferred to Sherman for burial.
Survivors in addition to his parents of Sherman include 2 brothers, Clifton Dykes of Dallas and James Dykes of Irving; a half-brother, Scott Cherry of 809 N. Ross; a sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Melton of Dallas; a step-sister, Donna Sue Cherry of the Ross Street address; and step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Buchanan of 1009 E. Chaffin and Mrs. Exile Cherry of Bells.

TEXAN IS ONE OF 17 WAR DEAD
Washington (AP) - Seventeen servicemen killed in action in Vietnam were identified Wednesday by the Defense Department.  They included one Texan: Army PFC Monte D. Dykes, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Dykes of Sherman.

Services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Friendship Methodist Church for PFC Monte Dale Dykes, 20, who was killed in action while engaging the enemy in Vietnam on August 29th.
Services were conducted by Rev. C.J. Graves, pastor of Friendship Methodist Church and Rev. Harry Pesnell, pastor of the Belmont Baptist Church.  Burial was at Friendship Cemetery where military rites were accorded at the grave.  Waldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The body of PFC Dykes is scheduled to arrive in Sherman Monday afternoon and was at the funeral home until services time Tuesday.
PFC Dykes was born January 26, 1949 at Sherman, son of Leroy Dykes and the late Mrs. Elizabeth Dykes.  He attended Sherman public schools and entered the Army in February 1969.  He left for Vietnam on July 18, 1969.
He is survived by his father and step-mother of 809 N. Ross Ave.; 2 brothers, Clifton Dykes of Dallas and James Dykes of Irving; one sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Melton of Dallas; one half-brother, Scott Cherry of Sherman; one step-sister, Donna Sue Cherry of Sherman; the step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Buchanan of Sherman and Mrs. Exie Cherry of Bells; 4 nieces and 4 nephews.
Pallbearers were Eddy Spykes, Larry Spykes, Alton Barrett, Jimmy Martin, Jerry Dhane, and Joe A. Dodson.
