An eccentric, yet in many respects a remarkable man died in Sherman a few days ago.  We refer to John Greenfield
Thomas, who resided here for a number of years and was well known to a number of our people.
Mr. Thomas was born in Ireland June 14, 1834 and came to this country at a very early age.  He was a soldier in the Civil war on the Federal side.  After the war he was attached to the police force of St. Louis and arose to the position of chief.
The writer had known Mr. Thomas for a great many years, and on many occasions found him a very interesting man
to converse with.  While he was eccentric, there was a lovable side to his nature, and if the world was as harmless as John G. Thomas, it would be a good place to live in.  He had a wonderful memory and was always interested in passing events.
The interment was in Fairview and there were loving friends and relatives present to pay their last respects.
The deceased has a millionaire half brother, who is at present a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He leaves a wife and several children.
