LOCALS
PIONEER DENISON NEGRO DIES TODAY
A.H. Terrell, a recognized leader among Denison's colored citizens, died suddenly at the family home, 620 W. Morton street, Tuesday morning at 3 o'clock.  After closing his grocery store at 600 W. Bond street, Terrel retired Monday evening apparently in good health.
Terrell was closely identified with the colored schools, having spent several years as a teacher, first at the Iron Ore School south of Denison and later in the city schools here.  The new Terrell High School was named in his honor.
Resigning as a teacher in 1893, he entered the grocery business which he followed with the exception of a few years, until his death.  About 9 years ago, he left Denison to associate himself with his brother in a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee,
but soon returned again opening his grocery store which he operated especially for his race.
He had lived about 45 years in Denison and was around 68 years old.  Terrell was a deacon of the Hopewell Baptist Church and served as secretary of that church when the new $40,000 building was constructed.  He also was a member of the colored Knights of Pythias, Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges.
Surviving are his widow; 2 sons; and a daughter, all of Denison.
Funeral services were held at Fairview Cemetery Thursday morning.
