Chris Jay Cowen
24 December 1950 - 15 September 2021

Chris Jay Cowen, age 70, of Wylie, Texas, passed away on September 15, 2021.  He was born December 24, 1950 to James William Cowen and Verna Louise (Green) Cowen. He attended Odessa High School where he met the love of his life, Shara Polk, and they were married May 30, 1970, in Odessa, Texas.  A few years later, God blessed them with a daughter named Amy Beth Cowen.  Chris liked exploring nature with Amy and passing along his love of animals, and he continued that tradition with his granddaughters as well. After 2 years of college, Chris was drafted and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war years.  After he completed his military career, he became a youth pastor in Mississippi. A few years later he came back to Texas, pastoring churches in Fannin County and the Texas panhandle. He also finished his education at Texas A&M at Commerce. After 35 years of pastoral ministry, he retired and began working with International Commission, taking and leading international mission trips.  His passion was telling people about Jesus Christ whether in preaching, teaching, home visits or mission trips.  He and Shara travelled numerous times to Russia, but he especially loved taking trips to Africa. Chris is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shara Lynn Cowen; his daughter, Amy Suttle and husband Will, and granddaughters Ashlyn and Gretchen Suttle.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. (Bill) and Verna Cowen and by his brother, James William Cowen, Jr.
Family and friends will gather to visit from 10a.m. to 11a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Fisher Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 25, 2021 with Rev. Jerry Coffman and Rev. Dewey Watson officiating.  Following the service, a private burial will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Denison.
