Evelyn Voight Crawford
28 August 1922 - 31 March 2022

Evelyn Voight, born on August 28, 1922 to Kurt and Maud Voight in Dallas, Texas, passed peacefully surrounded by family on March 31, 2022 in Denison, Texas.
On April 13, 1941, Evelyn married James Henry Crawford in Dallas, Texas. Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper for H.L. Hunt Company, Mercantile Bank and Sears Roebuck and Company. Together James and Evelyn had two wonderful daughters, Pepper Smith and Delaine Johnson. Both daughters were influenced by their mother’s determination and discipline, inspiring them to set and achieve their own personal goals. An avid athlete outside the workplace, Evelyn served as the first baseman for the women’s softball team for Hermann Sons, Lagow Church, and even Mercantile Bank. She was also the Hermann Sons State Bowling Champion. Evelyn was a strategic, disciplined planner who partnered with James to set the financial plans that made their dreams a reality. In 1975, Evelyn and James relocated to Grandpappy’s Point in Denison, Texas to settle in the retirement home they had been building together since 1959.
Evelyn never hesitated to share her perspective; an equal mix of love and straight talk. Her kind heart extended well beyond her family as a leader in the Ladies Auxiliary in Elks Lodge # 238 and a volunteer for more than 20 years at Texoma Medical Center. Evelyn cherished time with friends and family and loved baseball, line dancing, cards, darts, shuffleboard, pingpong, and ice cold beer. All passions she shared with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was an independent, strong, loving woman, and was a wonderful role model for all those who were privileged to know her. Evelyn was a  beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Pepper Smith of Friendswood, Texas and Delaine Johnson (Stan) of Denison, Texas, her grandchildren Autumn Bockart (Scott) of League City, Texas, Chad Smith (Andrea) of Austin Texas, Eric Johnson of Houston, Texas, Byron Johnson (Kerri) of Dallas, Texas, Tara Adams (Jeff) of Austin, Texas, and her ten great grandchildren Summer Bockart, Hudson Bockart, Langston Smith, Ellison Smith, Cole Johnson, Luke Johnson, Molly Johnson, Sadie Johnson, Graham Johnson, and Zane Adams.
Evelyn’s family would like to thank and recognize the teams who cared for her at Wesley Village and Woodlands Place Rehabilitation Suites over the last six years. Each and every team member made a difference and helped her create a home of love, joy, and comfort. Finally, a thank you to Dr. Ted Truly, Evelyn’s dedicated physician who helped her navigate healthcare, her way, until the very end.
A celebration of Evelyn Voight Crawford’s life will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Denison, Texas with a graveside service on Tuesday April 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Evelyn’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
