PIONEER DENISON RESIDENT DIES
Special to The Democrat

Denison - Ernst Martin Kohl, 78, pioneer Denison resident, died at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday at the family home, 300 East Main, after a 7 months illness.  Funeral services had not been arranged Tuesday noon, but Shorty and Murray will have
charge of burial at Fairview cemetery.
A native of Weimar, Germany, Ernst Martin Kohl, was born July 7, 1857, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Kohl, the father being a railroad director.  The son chose the life of a sailor and rose to the rank of Captain.  At the age of 13 Martin, as he was called, entered navigation school and later the German navy at Hamburg. He became Captain and for 14 years practically lived on the sea.
In 1885 he came to the United States to visit a friend at Austin, Texas, and found the state capitol in the process of erection.  Needing workmen who were capable of doing the heavy splicing, the construction foreman induced Mr. Kohl
to apply his naval training along this line.  Liking Texas very much the young German soon resigned from the navy and visited New Orleans, Dallas, and thence to Denison where in 1885 he established a grocery business, first on Lama, then
on Houston, and finally on East Main, where the store was combined into a building for a home which was a replica of the old homeplace in Weimar.
Mr. Martin, always a lover of music, attended a sangerfest at Austin and continue to Fredericksburg where lived the Brockman family.  He began courting Miss Adele Brockman, also a musician, and made her his wife in 1887.
Besides the widow there are 5 children: Mrs. Elsie Fisher of El Paso, Miss Bertha Kohl of Denison; Mrs. Erna Cobb of Denison; Ernst Kohl, Jr. of Muskogee; and Felix Kohl of Paris.  There are also surviving a brother, E.W. Kohl of Hamburg, Germany; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Frieda Kuhn of Darmstadt, Germany; and Mrs. Elizabeth Stapff of Berlin, Germany.
The early life of E. Martin Kohl was somewhat glamorous and conductive to development of an aesthetic nature.  His boyhood home was the gathering place of prominent artists, particularly of musicians, since the boy's parents were ardent
patrons of the fine arts and music.  Mr. Kohl knew personally such composed as Franz Liszt, Hungarian pianist who came to Weimar to direct operas and concerts.
Hans Wagner was also among his personal friends, and he knew the life stories of other famous composers from first hand.  It was one of Mr. Kohl's hobbies to sing Christmas carols with his friends encircled about him.  At the gathering in
his home here at Christmas time, 1934, Mr. Kohl likened the group to his old-world friends as they sang "Silent Night," a composition of a young German priest, Franz Grueber.
The pioneer citizen was a member of the Lutheran church, the Sons of Hermann and the Woodmen of the World.

KOHL FUNERAL
Denison - Funeral services for Ernst Martin Kohl, who died Tuesday morning, were set for 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Short-Murray chapel, Rev. Harry Lee Virden, rector of St. Luke's church, officiating.
Interment followed at Fairview cemetery.
