JOSEPH BRUTSCHE DEAD
Passes Away Very Suddenly at the Old Homestead on W. Chestnut St.

One of the saddest events that have happened in Denison for many years was the sudden death of our pioneer townsman, Joe Brutsche, Thursday. For a number of years, Mr. Brutsche has been almost a daily visitor to the Gazetteer office. He was one of the most welcome guests that ever crossed the threshold. He dropped in on Thursday morning and made an unusually long visit. At no period had we ever seen him in better health and spirits.  We little realized that in a few short hours death, silently and swiftly, would steal into the din and clamor of a busy world about him and led him away.
Mr. Brutsche died at home. When stricken down he was engaged in doing some work in the back yard. Death was instant.
It was a flash from time into eternity. We think it was a good way to step behind the veil, for long suffering is not the wish
of any one. Mr. Brutsche was one of the old guards of pioneer Denison, casting his lot here in 1872. His whole life had been a very busy and useful one. His first business venture was with the Adams Express Co., of which he was agent. He was better known as city assessor and collector. When he retired from that office he took up fire insurance and was conducting that business at the time of his death. As a business man he was not surpassed in Denison. In 1878, was married to Miss May Legate, the sister of Russ Legate, who was a teacher at the time in the public schools. To the union six children were born. He is survived by the following relatives: His wife, Mrs. May A. Brutsche; children, Mrs. John Gregg, Sherman; Mrs. Frank G. Hobart, Fort Worth; Sidney Brutsche, Oklahoma City; Harry Brutche, Denison; Miss Eugenia Brutsche, Denison; Joseph Brutsche Jr., Denison.
There never was a more beautiful family circle than the Brutsches. They all seemed to be moved by one impulse, to love and respect each other. There was no circumstance in life that ever interrupted for a moment this devotion to each other. No words can convey the anguish that has fallen like a pall on this household. If there ever was a husband and parent wrapped up, absorbed, in the happiness and comfort of his wife and children, that man was Joe Brutsche. And it was all returned as it seemed to be a part of the children's lives to make their parents happy. And now that the father is dead it will be a consoling thought in the future that they reciprocated his affection and proved worthy of their bringing up.
We are sorry that Joe Brutsche is dead, and that sorrow is shared by thousands who loved and esteemed him. His character and disposition were of the sort that he made friends and held them.
This is the first death to occur in the family - the first grave is made - and at Fairview will repose in eternal rest one of the noblest men that has ever lived in the community.
The funeral of deceased took place Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the Episcopal Church. The interment was at Fairview cemetery.
