J. E. Howard, 85, prominent Denison business man who since his retirement a number of years ago, has divided his time between Denison and a California home, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a local hospital after an illness of two months. For the past seven weeks he had been in the hospital. He made his home at the Hotel Simpson.
Prior to his retirement he was a successful farmer, landowner and business man. He was prominent in Masonic activities and was a life member of the Hella Temple Shrine Dallas consistory, and of allmasonic order in Denison, including the Shriners, Scottish Rite and Knight Templars. He was thirty-second degree mason. Mr. Howard was also a member of the Elks.
Mr. Howard was born in Springfield, Tenn., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Howard and attended school there. He came to Denison at the age of twelve with his parents and settled three miles southeast on what is now known as the Howard farms. He married Miss Fannie Williams in Denison. He was for years a prominent real estate dealer here, being associated with the firm of Howard and Reardon. He was also a member of the druggist firm of Howard and Bailey. Mr. Howard was a member of the Calvary Baptist church.
Surviving are one stepdaughter, Mrs. Pearl Williams of El Paso; three nephews, Roscoe Cutler of Dallas, William Johnson of Los Angeles and Wyatt Cutler of San Francisco; and seven nieces, Mrs. Lulu Fitzhugh, Mrs. Gussie Watson, Mrs. Aurora Carter and Mrs. Florence Anderson of Dallas, Mrs. Emma Lovellette-Seay of Denison and Mrs. Minnie Honaway and Mrs. Neva Carlos of Los Angeles.
The body will lie in state at Short-Murray chapel pending word from nephews as to definite funeral arrangements.
