Crenshaw dies

Jerry Crenshaw Sr., 56, publisher and general manager of the Denison Herald since 1975. died in a local hospital this morning after a short illness.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Calvin Girvin officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under direction of Bratcher Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Duggan, Pat Bassano, Med Crawford, Jeff Crawford, Greg Crawford, Clark Cherry and Mike Crenshaw.
Crenshaw began his newspaper career delivering The Denison Herald on horseback as a youngster. He joined the newspaper as a full-time employee in 1957 when he became sports editor.
He was a graduate of Denison High School and attended San Angelo State College on a football scholarship. He entered
the Navy, at the outset of the Korean War, serving in the Far East, Middle East and European Theaters before returning to Denison and obtaining his degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State College in Durant.
Crenshaw served as news editor and wire editor after a long stint as sports editor. Then, in 1972,Crenshaw moved to Greenville as editor of the Herald Banner. While there he headed the Harte-Hanks editorial training program which trained most new reporters joining the company. After two and one-half years he returned to Denison as publisher, succeeding Cleo Crittenden.
He was a member of the board of directors of  Texoma Medical Center Inc. and the Denison Hospital Authority, and was a past president of the Denison Industrial Foundation. He had served as an officer and director of the Denison Chamber of commerce and had been active in other civic endeavors.
He also had served as a member of the board of directors of the Texoma Regional Blood Bank and Denison Savings and Loan Association. He was a past president of the Denison Rod and Gun Club, and was a member of 'Woodlawn Country Club, the Elks Lodge and the Denison Rotary Club.
He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Crenshaw was a member of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association,Texas Press Association, Texas Daily Newspaper Association and Associated Press Managing Editors.
Crenshaw was named Division Head of the year 1985 for Harte-Hanks Newspapers, which owned The Herald for many years until it was sold in March 1988 to Donrey Media Group.
Crenshaw was born in Sherman on July 15, 1933, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Crenshaw. He married June 2, 1953 to LuEdyth Cherry in Calera.
Survivors include his wife, of Denison; four sons, Jerry Mr., Billy and Chris of Denison, and Colby of Lewisville; one daughter, Carolyn, of Denison; one brother, Billy of Denison; and two grandchildren.
The family will be at the home, 800 South Holland.
