POSTMASTER, C. T. DAUGHERTY
Sunday morning, February 18, between two and three o'clock, Postmaster C. T. Daugherty died at his home, No. 530 West Gandy street. Mr. Daugherty had not enjoyed robust health for a number of years, but inasmuch as he was up and about his business as usual until Friday evening of last week not even his most intimate friends were expecting his death when it came.
Charles Thomas Daugherty was born at White Pigeon, Mich., Feb. 14, 1857. He attended the common schools of White Pigeon and graduated at Albion College, Albion, Mich. In the spring of 1876 he accompanied his parents to Denison and, with but a few month's intermission, has made his home here continuously since that time. In January 1881, Mr. Daugherty and Miss Tillie Lake were united in marriage in this city, and Rue, the only child, is now in his seventh year.
Mr. Daugherty's first employment in Denison was in the Denison postoffice. In 1876-77 he was assistant postmaster to Capt. Dan Webster.  Since that time, with the exception of the four years of President Cleveland's first term, he has been continuously connected with the mail service. During the administration of  W. J. Scott, Mr. Daugherty was in the railway mail service between Denison and Houston and was postmaster during the President Arthur administration. He was succeeded by Maj. L. L. Maughs and was again made postmaster by President Harrison. The term of office expired in December last but as a successor had not been named was still postmaster at the time of his death.
Early last spring he was appointed by County Judge Gregg as administrator for the A. R. Collin estate. The duties of administrator for so great an interest added to those of the postmastership were to laborious for a man of ordinary strength and although friends were constantly advising him to resign one or the other of the trusts he did not do so, expecting daily to be relieved of the postoffice.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence Monday evening by Pastor Cooper, of the Woodard street Methodist church, of which society he was a communicant. An unusually large crowd of representative people gathered in and around the residence and at 3:30 o'clock the procession began its march to the grave.
Mr. Daugherty was an honorary member of the Denison Rifles, an active member of the Elks, Knights of Pythias and Knights of Honor, and each of these societies together with the postoffice was well represented in the procession. At the grave, in Fairview cemetery, the Knights of Pythias officiated.
