Funeral services for James A. Ayres, 71, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Central Christian Church, of which he was a member. Officiating ministers were Rev. Lee H. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and Rev. James L. Cooper, pastor of the First Baptist Church.  Burial in Everheart Cemetery at Canaan was directed by Glen Everheart.  Pallbearers were H.B. Everheart, R.R. Summers, B.C. McBroom, Lee Penny, Wallace Wilson, and Paul Stephens.
Mr. Ayres died at 11:05 p.m. March 6 in a Sherman hospital after an illness of about ten days, having suffered a heart attack following a siege of influenza.
Born July 15, 1880 in the Canaan community, Jim Ayres was the son of Marcus A. and Mary Batsell Ayres.  He grew to manhood in that community and on September 9, 1901 was married to Miss Nannie May Windrow.  He had been connected with the cotton ginning business for fifty years, having begun work for the Canaan gin in 1901.  After that gin was destroyed by a tornado in 1919, he became connected with the North Texas Gin Company in Whitewright and since 1925 had been connected with the Donigan gin here.
Last September Mr. and Mrs. Ayres celebrated their golden anniversary at their home in the Canaan community where they had resided on the same farm during all their married life.
Mr. Ayres' hobby was wildlife, and he always had several pet birds and animals around his place.  The last time Sun editor talked to him he was telling about his pet crow and remarked that he wanted to make a deal with some boy this spring so the he would have two pet crows.  He loved growing things, especially flowers, and his friends covered his last resting place with a great mass of flowers.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Tom Ayres and Roy Ayres of Bells; and Ned Ayres and Mark Ayres of Whitewright; two daughters, Mrs. Walter Adkins of Walters, Oklahoma and Mrs. J. Lee Smith of Bogata; a foster brother, George Ayres of San Angelo; and eleven grandchildren.
