SHERMAN JEWS TO OBSERVE YOM KIPPUR
Most Solemn Day in Jewish Life at Sunset Tuesday

The most solmen day in the Jewish life begins at sunset Tuesday.  It is known as Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, known in the Jewish calendar as the tenth day of month of Tishri.  It is a day of reconciliation of man with his fellowman and with God.  The day is the climax for the Jewish holiday season which began with the Jewish New Year, September 12.
It is the custom for those who celebrate the day to spend the time in the synagogues where a series of four services are held, one starting as another ends.
The Sherman Jewish congregation will hold services Tuesday evening and again Wednesday morning, both in charge of Jonas Rosenfield of Dallas, at Knights of Pythias hall.
From the setting of the sun Tuesday until the appearance of the stars Wednesday, no food is taken.
The day is spent in prayer and repenting.
The following Scriptural quotation refered to the day: "On this day He will atone you, to purify you from all of your sins."  The day is, therefore, a day of reconcilliation of man with his fellowman and with God, and is intended not only to bring peace between men and God, but to bring peace between neighbor and neighbor.
The four services begin with the chanting of the Kol Nidre, followed by the Mussaf, which commences with a description of the atonement rites as practiced in the day of temple at Jerusalem.  The Neilah service is next held and is understood to be the hour when decision is made as to man's fate.  According to the Jewish belief, those who earnestly take part in the services will bring pardon for sins committed.
While the services of prayer and other rites preceding the sermon proper will be of interest to those of the Jewish race, others are welcome to hear the sermons.  "What is Sin?" will be Mr. Rosenfield's subject Tuesday evening, and "What is Atonement?" Wednesday morning.
