DIED IN FLAMES
The Horrible Fate of John Porter, Colored
Occupied a Little Frame Structure, the Property of Firm for Whom He Worked

Denison, March 6 - John Porter, colored, aged 50 or 55 years, was burned to death this morning at 12:30 o'clock in his home, No. 501 West Bond street.  The origin of the fire and the exact manner in which the man met his death are shrouded in mystery.  Porter lived alone in the house which was owned by Charles H. Jones & Bro., for which firm the Negro had been employed as a driver for many years.  When the flames were discovered and the alarm of fire was sent to the fire department, the structure was enveloped and the fire company had no chance to save the building.
Those first upon the scene did not see Porter emerge from the house and as he was nowhere in the crowd, the obvious conclusion was that he had been burned to death in the fire.  When the flames were reduced sufficiently to make an examination of the ruins, the firemen, after a brief search, located the charred remains of the Negro about four feet from his bed.  The remains were turned over to the colored undertaker.
Insurance to the amount of $605 was carried on the house by the owners.
