Israel Jenkins
1862 - 1925

On April 28, 1925, Isreal Jenkins, who lived two and one half miles southwest of here passed into the Great Beyond. He had been ill for some time before the end came. He leaves many sorrowing relatives and friends.
Isreal Jenkins was born in southeast Missouri, March 8, 1862. He was married at the age of twenty-two to Elizabeth Ruffin; to this union was born four children, three of which survive him, his wife and one child going on before.
In 1805 he married Miss Jane Roberts of Harrison, Arkansas. To this union was born seven children, six of whom survive him, his wife died in 1919.
Those children who survive him are; Lonnie Jenkins, Mrs Lillie Roberts of Dorchester, Mrs Cora Hall of Gunter, Mrs Edna Ridinger, Vertie, Marvin and Vera Jenkins all of Collinsville, Mrs Fannie Dawson and Ernest Jenkins of St. Joe.
Deceased had seventeen children, grandchildren and two great grandcildten. All the children were present at the funeral. Services were conducted by Rev. W. L. Jenkins, a nephew of the deceased, of Odell, Texas. He was laid to rest the the Collinsville cemetery.



Martha Jenkins

Israel Jenkins was s/o Hiram & Asenith Whiteside Jenkins. He was 6 months old when his father was killed in the Civil War Battle of Corinth.  Mr. Israel first married a young widow, Martha Smith Ruffin who had one son, Willie Ruffin. They had 4 children ~ Lonnie, Cora, Freddie, and Lillie.
After her death, he married Martha Jane Roberts. They had seven children ~ Vertie, Edna, John, Fannie, Earnest, Marvin and Vera. All but two of Israel's children are buried in the Collinsville Cemetary. His two wives were cousins.

Mrs. Isreal Jenkins Dead.

Mrs. Martha Jane Jenkins age 52 years, died November 14th at the family residence near Collinsville, after a short illness of two days. She was born in Springfield, Mo., in 1866 and moved from there to Arkansas where she was married to Isreal Jenkins and later moved to Texas.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Charles Cox at the Collinsville cemetery and interment immediately followed.
She is survived by her husband, three daughters and three sons as follows: Mrs. Edna Ridinger, Misses Fannie and Vera Jenkins, Vertie, Earnest and Marvin Jenkins.

The Times extends sympathy to the bereaved.


Isreal Jenkins moved his family from Greene County, Arkansas to Bowie County, Texas, after the death of his first wife Martha Smth Ruffin Jenkins.
The Jenkins family lived in Bowie County, Texas; while living there Isreal Jenkins drove a freight wagon making deliveries to DeKalb, Paris, Detroit, New Boston, Texarkana and other towns around this area. He also worked at the gin. The family moved to Grayson County, Texas in about 1900. The move was made in a wagon; while making the move, a wheel came off the wagon and mashed his daughter Cora's hand against the wagon.

3. John Thomas Jenkins, born 20 April 1897, Bowie County, TX, died 23 September 1898, buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bowie County, TX.
4. Frances Malinda Jenkins, born 15 September 1899, Bowie County, TX.
5. William Ernest Jenkins, born 10 August 1901, Grayson County, TX, died 30 April 1948, Wichita County, TX, buried in Collinsville Cemetery, Grayson, TX.
6. Marvin Israel Jenkins, born 3 June 1903, Grayson County, TX.
7. Vera Jane Jenkins, born 16 November 1907, Grayson County, TX.
