Nellie Mae Swanson
(December 7, 1917 - December 29, 2009)

Nellie Mae Swanson passed away December 29, 2009, at the age of 92. Born in Pillager, Minnesota on December 7, 1917, (the youngest of eleven and the only girl). She married Leland Swanson in 1942 and they moved to Grayson County after being stationed with the United States Air Force at Perrin AFB in 1953. Nellie and Leland were both known for beginning
the food service operations of Grayson County College from the college's beginning in 1965 and for the following ten years. She was known to family as "Gram" and all as the lady who loved baby blue. Nellie found pleasure in life not by outside interests but by being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all that knew her. Gram's life blessed many; she always seemed to know just how to make your day better - her laughter was contagious and her practical jokes were hysterical! She could starch a shirt like nobody's business and bake a chocolate chip cookie that would make you hurt yourself trying to get to the next one! Gram would spend hours teaching us the states and capitols and reading Amelia Bedelia books. Every Friday she visited starting the morning with coffee and WBAP playing in the background; as you can see her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, including the family dogs who were often treated to T-Bone steaks and Blue Bell ice cream; we were all her hobby; she was a lady that took great pride in everything she did; no matter how great or small the task, she always wanted to do her best and taught us to do our best in everything we did. "Gram" warned us that life would be tough, but taught us it could always be fun. The last ten years have been the most difficult and often challenging to find the fun but as a family we have persevered. We thank you Gram for always helping
us find the fun, the laughter, and the love in life... Nellie is survived by her best friend and daughter, Karen Brown and husband Paul; son, Gerald Swanson and wife Charmaine; granddaughters, Kelli Brown and Karla Dwyer, husband Larry; great grandson, Conner Dwyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland in 1981. They were married for 39 years. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, December 31st, 2009 at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of American Funeral Home of Denison, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Elder Watch program of Texoma Council of Governments, 1117 Gallagher Dr., Sherman, TX 75090 in Nellie's name. 1117 Gallagher Dr. ?
