Joe L. Walthall, age 89, passed away Tuesday morning, June 22, 2010, at Texoma Healthcare Center of Sherman

He was born in Pine Mills, Texas on May 28, 1921, to the late Joseph and Lila Mae Walthall. He moved to New Mexico in his teens to work for CCC building runways, and later joined the U. S. Air Force during World War II. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, during the war. In 1945, he returned to Alamogordo, NM, and married Doris Crosby. At the time of his death, they had been married 65 years.
Joe and his wife, Doris, moved to Sherman in the 1950s for work. He retired in 1986, after working for Montgomery Ward in Sherman for 35 years. He was a long time member and Deacon at East Sherman Baptist Church and Fairview Baptist prior to that. His many hobbies included woodworking, painting, gardening, country music, dominoes, pool, games, and puzzles. He liked making people laugh and was always quick with a joke. He enjoyed being with his family and friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lila Walthall; two sisters, Bonnie Middleton and Clara Worthington; sister-in-law Windola Walthall; brother-in-law Eddie Crosby and grandson Devin Crawford.
He is survived by his wife Doris of Sherman, one son, Mike Walthall and wife Kathy of Sherman; two daughters: Linda (Walthall) Taylor and husband Larry, missionaries in Nigeria, and Lila Jo (Walthall) Martin of Sherman, TX; brother, Dile Ray Walthall of Gonzales, TX; brother-in-law Alton Middleton of Abilene, TX; sister-in-law Martha Crosby of Little Rock, AR; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services were at 10:00 am, Friday, June 25, 2010, at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman. Burial was at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 5805 Texoma Pkwy, Sherman, Texas. Services were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home, Sherman, Texas.
