Dr. Van Zant was born in Everton, Arkansas the son of John Lee Van Zant and Essie Trueblood Van Zant.  He died in a local hospital in Sherman, Texas. 

He graduated from Everton High School and served in the US Army for four years.  In 1955 he married Miss Barbara Duncan in Greenville, Mississippi.
Dr. Van Zant was a professor of economics at Austin College, Sherman, Texas for 22 years.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Arkansas.  Received his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin where he served as a teaching assistant from 1960-1964.  Dr. Van Zant taught school in Alice, Texas and the University of Texas at El Paso before arriving at Austin College.  He served as chairman of the Department of Economics at Austin College and held the John T. Jones Chair of Economics.
He was also a certified planner and was associated with Carter Financial Management in Dallas, Texas.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Mark of Beaumont, Texas; and John of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Kermit of Garland, Texas; Carl of Everton; and Burl of Yakima, Washington; two sisters, Meryl Philips and Ethel Morrison, both of Everton.
Funeral services were held at Wynne Chapel at Austin College, with Rev. Henry Bucher, chaplain for the college, officiating.  Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home, Sherman.

SHERMAN - Funeral services for Barbara Jo Van Zant were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 14 in the chapel at First Baptist Church of Sherman with Rev. Robin McGee of the church officiating. Burial followed at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Van Zant, 77, passed away Tuesday, June 8 in Sherman.

Barbara was born August 7, 1932, in Searcy, Arkansas to the late Perry and Virginia Duncan. She graduated from Searcy schools and the Central Arkansas College. In 1955, Barbara and Dr. Lee Van Zant were married in Greenville, Mississippi.  Mrs. Van Zant was a lifelong educator primarily teaching the elementary grades for Denison schools. After 35 years of marriage, Dr. Van Zant passed away in August 1990. Barbara retired from teaching in 1999. In retirement she enjoyed walking at Fairview Park and practicing Tae Kwon Do.
Mrs. Van Zant is survived by two sons, John Van Zant and his wife Mary; and Mark Van Zant of Beaumont; and one granddaughter, Laura Van Zant, all of Bahrain.
