SHERMAN MAN SUFFERS ATTACK DURING FOOTBALL GAME, DIES
Joe Pitman, 48, of 1818 N. Travis, native of  Sherman and owner-operator of Joe Pitman's Trim Shop, died unexpectedly Friday night while attending the Sherman-Denison football game at Denison.  He suffered an attack during the game and was dead on arrival at a Denison hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at Waldo Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Tom Graves, pastor of the Key Memorial Methodist Church.  Burial was in Cedarlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home.
Mr. Pitman was born August 1, 1920 at Sherman, son of the late A.C. Pitman and the present Mrs. Lillie Ann Pitman.  He graduated from Sherman High School in 1938 and served with the United States Air Force during World War II.  He was married to the former Miss Merle Cravens on October 21, 1941, in Sherman and had lived here all of his life.  He was owner-operator of the Joe Pitman;s Trim Shop for the last 16 years.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a former member of the Sherman Optimist Club.  He was a member of the Key Memorial Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife and mother; one son, Brent Pitman of Sherman; one daughter, Mrs. Don Cummins of Arlington; 3 sisters, Mrs. Bessie Rutherford and Mrs. Roxie Garris, both of Sherman; and Mrs. L.L. Allison of Denison; 2 brothers, F.J. Pitman of Denison; and Hayden Pitman of Sherman;; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Floyd Kniffen, Jim Moughon, Raymond Blalack, Ommer Short, Howard Hooker, David Burns, Joe Ulrich and Ray Vanderfriff.  Honorary pallbearers were Cotton Hooker, Bob Kiker, Billy Jeff Hall, Mike Walker, Melvin Dunham, Jack Jackson, Bill Cummins, Ed Chase, and Jack McDaniel.
