Funeral services for William C. Head were held Thursday afternoon, November 15, 2018 at the Cedarlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Sherman.
William passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Traditions Senior Living.  It was his 103rd birthday.  He would have thought he pulled the best joke ever, to have passed during the 11th hour of the 11th days of the 11th month on his birthday.
He was born on November 11, 1915 near Lindale, Texas, sone of W.C. Head, Sr. and Amanda Smith Head.  Raised in Mineola, Texas, he had a great sense of humor about growing up in East Texas during the Depression and told stories about those days.  In one story, he said he had "named" himself.  He said that when he was born, there were no birth certificates, and he only knew the day he was born because his parents told him.  His parents named him with the initials, W.C., and called him "Dub" after his father.  When he entered the service, he had to have a first and middle name, so he named himself...William Charles!
He told a story about when he was in the 3rd grade, and the high school in his home of Mineola burned.  When the fire alarm sounded, he was on the toilet.  He would laugh and say, "What do ya do them?"  He expected you to fill in the blank.  He was a character!
He was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served during World War II, stationed in India, Tezgaon, Kurmitola and Lalmanirhat Air Fields as an airplane mechanic.  After the war, he was stationed at Perrin Air Force Base in Sherman, where he met and married Cora Alice Lewis, daughter of Harry and Ethel Logue Lewis on October 2, 1948.  He left the service for a time to farm, but re-enlisted shortly thereafter.  He remained in the Air Force, serving at Keflavik Air Base outside Reykjavik, Iceland and at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo, Japan retiring from Perrin AFB after 22 years in 1968.    He was a member of the Baptist Church - actually, several Baptist churches, since he could never remain happy with one for very long.
In retirement, he loved gardening and raised his own strawberries and vegetables in his backyard, which was always planted in pine trees to remind him of his roots in East Texas.  He also enjoyed card games, Rummikub and dominoes, and was still enjoying beating everyone who would play him until his final days.
William is survived by 2 daughters, Marty Allison and husband, Edwin, of Sherman; and Marion Wild and husband, Steve, of Houston; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchilren.
He was preceed in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Mildred "Millie" Fuller; 2 brothers and 1 sister.
The family requests that memorials be made to either Autism Advocacy or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
