SHERMAN - Johnnie Lee Clark Sr. of Sherman, 89 year-old former jailer for the Grayson County Sheriff's office, passed away Monday evening, March 2, 2009 at the Bonham VA Nursing Home in Bonham.
Services were held Friday afternoon, March 6, 2009 in the Chapel on the Hill at Cedarlawn Memorial Park.  Rev. Bill Beasley, chaplain for the Bonham VA Hospital, officiated and entombment followed at the Chapel on the Hill Mausoleum.  An honor guard from Sheppard Air Force Base conducted full military honors.  Arrangements were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home.
Johnnie was born August 25, 1919 in Kiowa, Oklahoma, son of Hubert Clark and Georgia Puckett Melton.  He moved to Texas at a young age, where he attended schools, and later attended Grayson County College.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 and served in the military police during World War II.  After serving in the Army for 8 years he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served in the Air Police during the Korean War and received his honorable discharge January 1, 1968 after 28 years of military duty.  He was stationed at Perrin Air Force Base 3 times during his service in the Air Force. He married Della Wenzel on May 15, 1943 in Winona, Minnesota.
Johnnie was hired as daytime jailer by Grayson County Sheriff Woody Blanton and also worked under Sheriff Driscoll before taking employment at Austin College for 12 years as a campus policeman. He retired in 1990.
He enjoyed spending time in his work shop behind his home, doing trail rides in Grayson County, talking on his CB radio, where he was known as "Double T" or the "Town Tamer".  He also loved watching western movies on television, especially John Wayne movies.  He was a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Della Clark of Sherman; sons, James J. "Jim" Clark and wife, Bobbie, of Gig Harbor, Washington and Johnnie Lee "John" Clark II and wife, Vicki, of Hillsboro, Texas; daughter, Sue Clark of Sherman; 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
