Sarah M. Walker
29 October 1849 - 12 March 1925

Van Alstyne Leader

Mrs. Sarah Marr Walker was born October 11, 1848, in Bledsoe county, Tennessee near McMinnville.  Her childhood and young womanhood were spent in the city of her nativity.  In the year 1868, she was married to W.J. Page, who preceded her to the land beyond a number of years ago.  To this union were born seven children, of whom the following are living: J.W. "Kit" Page of the Cannon community, J.B. Page of Henryetta, Oklahoma, Mrs. Stella Cantrell of Henryetta, Oklahoma, and M.I. Page of Sherman.
In the year of 1886, Mrs. Page was married the second time to J.J. Walker, who passed into rest several years ago.  To this union were born two children, both surviving: Vernon Walker and Oll Walker of the Cannon community.

Since the death of Mr. Walker, Mrs. Walker has made her home with her son, Vernon Walker, at Cannon, where she passed into rest on Thursday evening of last week.

At the age of 18, Mrs. Walker united with the Baptist church, and for 58 years remained a faithful and devoted adherent of her faith, exemplifying in all of the relations of life the fullest conceptions of true Christianity and winning for herself the love and affection of all with whom she came into contact.  As wife, as mother, as neighbor and as friend, Mrs. Walker fulfilled completely her every obligation, and the sorrow and regret which is felt at her passing is shared with her family and relatives by all of the people of this community.

Funeral services were held from the Walker home at Cannon on Friday of last week, conducted by Rev. Leo Johnston, the pastor of the First Christian church.  A large gathering of friends was present to attest the esteem and regard held for their departed neighbor and friend.  The services were very impressive and the address of the minister embraced eloquent tribute to the life and the character of Mrs. Walker.  A profusion of floral offerings gave silent testimony of the friendship of the people of this community.  Interment was had at the Cannon cemetery.

Mrs. Walker is survived by the following brothers and sisters, in addition to the members of her immediate family: John Marr, Jim Marr and Mrs. Jack McKinney of Van Alstyne, and Mrs. Amanda Riddle of Sherman.  To all of these the sympathy of all who know this splendid family goes out in abundance.

Pallbearers were as follows: Jack Hunter, Ed Hunter, P.C. Crawford, Robert Powell, Dewey Wiggins, Ivy Grider.
