Henry Overbey was born in the State of Tennessee, on August 28, 1844.  During the war between the States he served in the Union army, and made a splendid record as a soldier.  On July 7, 1876, he was married to Miss Maria Lester.  To this union were born fourteen children, of whom six survive, as follows: Sam Overbey, Durant, Oklahoma; Lee Overbey, Tihomingo, Oklahoma; Charles
G. Overbey, Sherman, Texas; Royse Overbey and Mrs. Jim Shaw, residing in this community and Frank Overbey of Denison.

Some years after the close of the war between the States, Mr. Overbey moved into this community from Tennessee, making his home at Jameson, where he died on last Saturday morning, after a long illness.  The immediate cause of death was apoplexy, superinduced by his advanced age, he being 80 years, 3 months and 15 days old at the time of his death.

By all who knew him, Mr. Overbey was held in the highest possible esteem.  As long as he was able to come to town, he was a familiar figure on the streets of Van Alstyne, and on each visit, he would foregather with some of his numerous friends and enjoy himself talking with them of the olden days.  In his relations in every walk of life, in the family circle, in his dealings with his fellowman, in his attitude toward all of the activities of the people among whom he lived, he was at once the faithful husband and father, the business man of strictest integrity, and the public-spirited citizen.  His death removes another of the pioneers of this section, so many of whom have recently been called into the Long Rest.  To his family and relatives, the sympathy of all who knew him is most sincerely vouchsafed.

Funeral services were held at the Canon cemetery on Saturday afternoon, many of his friends gathering to unite in paying the last tribute of respect.  The service, which was conducted by Revs. Leo Johnston and Virgil M. Hailey, was most impressive and evidences of the sorrow felt by those present were manifest on all sides.  Beautiful floral offerings attested the regard and esteem
in which Mr. Overbey was held and the sincere sympathy felt for his family in their loss and bereavement.
