Joel R. Helvey
8 December 1857 - 1 September 1899

IN MEMORIAM
On the first day of September 1893, our friend and brother, J.R. Helvey, was called to his reward.  In the prime of his manhood he was cut down.
Born and raised near How, in this county, he knew no other home.  All his life was spent near the spot of his birth.
Although the youngest of the family, he was the first one called away.  Stricken with that dread disease, typhoid fever, he battled long and patiently for his life, but at last was forced to yield to the inevitable.
Without an enemy on earth, he was followed to his grave by a large concourse of his friends.  At the Akers cemetery, where he was buried, Bro. H.H. Hamilton delivered a very appropriate and feeling discourse, appealing to his friends to follow in his footsteps as the only safe way in life.
He was a dutiful son; a kind and loving brother; a devoted husband; an indulgent father; a true friend; and a model citizen.
To those who knew and loved him best we say: "Sorrow not as those who have no hope; but profit by his example and prepare to meet him in a better world.  The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.   Blessed be the name of the Lord."
A Friend and Brother
