Sherman - Services for Jack A.G. Cox, 83, of Sherman who passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center, were held in the Dannel Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Kenneth Dacus of Victory Missionary Baptist Church officiated, assisted by Mr. Cox's grandson, Barry Cox, youth minister. Interment followed in Aker Cemetery with military honors accorded at the graveside.
Jack was born December 7, 1921 to Grover Cleveland Bryant Cox and Ethel Almeda Barker in the Smith Oak community in Grayson county. He would have been 84 on his birthday. His aunt and uncle, Nolene and Olen Morphew and grandparents, George and Ella Barker helped raise him. He graduated from Bells High School in May 1940.
On September 15, 1949 he married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Scrivner, in Durant, Oklahoma. They spent their honeymoon in Muleshoe, Texas picking cotton. Audrey passed away December 14, 2001.
On May 8, 2004 he married Mildred Arrington in Denison, Texas.
On November 9, 1944 he reported for active duty in the U.S. Army. He served as Cannoneer of 155-MM gun crew during World War II. He served overseas 10 months in France and Germany.
He worked for Southern Pacific Railway Company as Switchman V and later worked for Anderson Clayton Foods as a painter for 26 years until his retirement. After retirement he worked for M&P Bank and Wilson N. Jones Hospital in maintenance. He truly was a "Jack of All Trades."
Jack was a lifetime member of the Victory Missionary Baptist Church, the first meeting was held in his home.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Audrey; and siblings, Fay Snider and Elza Cox.
He is survived by his daughter, Jackie Wilks, and husband, Tom, of Sherman; two son, Billy and wife, Gale, of Tom Bean; and Tommy Cox and wife, Mildred, of Denison; his wife, Mildred, of Denison; four brothers, Royce Cox of Gun Barrel City, Texas; Coy Claiborne of Longview; John Cox and Charles Cox, both of Couer d'Alene, Idaho; four sisters, Zuela Pennington of Corpus Christi; JoAnn Arnold of Pennsylvania; Martha Wolf of Quincy, Washington; and Abbie Stokes of Solman, Idaho; 8 grandchildren, Charles Wilks of Luella; Kim Haley of Tom Bean; Tommy Wilks of Howe; Kirstal Wilks of Sherman; Barry Cox of Luella, Theresa McNealy of Tom Bean; April Cox and Clay Cox, both of Luella; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers for Mr. Cox were grandsons, Charles Wilks; Barry Cox; Tommy Wilks; Clay Cox; and great-grandsons, Chad Wilks, Cory Hodge, Drew Hodge, and Zack Wilks.
