Houston and Texas Central Railway
H&TC

In 1852, the Galveston and Red River Railway (G&RR) became active. Construction of the railway began on January 1, 1853 in Houston with tracklaying beginning in early 1856. The railroad company name changed from G&RR to H&TC on September 1, 1856. During the Civil War, the railroad construction was halted but resumed in 1867 once the Civil War was over.

In 1871, the railroad track of the Houston and Texas Central Railway reached Corsicana. In 1872, the original line was extended to Dallas. In 1873, the original line reached Red River City, where it connected with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. At this time, an all-railroad route from Texas to St. Louis, Missouri and the eastern United States was formed.

In December 1873 a notice was printed in The Denison Daily News that all hotel "runners" and anyone who solicited customers for hotels, boarding and lodging houses as well as restaurants at railroad depots and other public places were required to pay an annual license of $10 and wear a badge bearing the words "Hotel Runner". These licenses were issued only to persons connected with responsible hotels paying state, county and city taxes. Also notice was give that thirty minutes before the arrival of and departure of M.K. & T. and Houston & Texas Central trains, the Denison depots and platforms "were to be free and clear of vagrants, loafers, idlers and people of disreputable character." (The Denison Daily News, December 21, 1873)

Dates of operation were 1856 - 1934.
