Funeral Home Begun Here
In 1900 by McKinneys

The first funeral business was established by Leak McKinney back in the early 1900, and was conducted along with the McKinney Furniture business. In 1925 Leak McKinney sold the funeral business to O.S. Yoder, and Yoder along with his son Howard Yoder, conducted the business in conjunction with the Yoder Chevrolet business, until 1935 when Yoder sold the funeral business to Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Fox.

In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Fox purchased the Slaughter residence and converted the home into a funeral home. Mr. and Mrs. Fox operated the business until January 1, 1953 when they sold the business to Don S. Flesher.

Don S. Flesher began working for Mr. and Mrs. Fox in 1948, graduated from Mortuary college in 1942; worked in funeral homes in Ft. Worth, Dallas, Houston, McKinney, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and returned to Van Alstyne as of January 1, 1953 to operate the business. Flesher remained in the same location as Mr. and Mrs. Fox had been operating the business.

When Flesher purchased the business he began planning for a new Funeral Home. On January 1, 1972, construction began on the new building and on February 15, 1973 Flesher Funeral Home moved into their new building.
