The City Hotel, owned by grocer and opera house proprietor, C.E. Carter, was located on Preston Street.  The main section of the Hotel was moved from Mantua.  It had been the home of Dr. James Lafayette Leslie, Van Alstyne's first businessman.

Between chimneys on the south end was the home of Dr. James L. Leslie. The north end was added and became the Carter Hotel, known later as "Commercial Hotel", which burned in 1922.  Mr. C.E. Carter, owner, and his daughter, Sallie Mae (Mrs. Lyman Umphress), are on the left of the downstairs porch.
