C. R. Ritenour

In presenting a "write-up" of Sherman we take pleasure in presenting a sketch of C. R. Ritenour and his superb business. This is indeed one of th leading enterprises of the city of Sherman. Twenty-one years ago this enterprise was established and today it is the leading feed and sale stables, transfer line and undertaking business in the city. In speaking of the undertaking business of Mr. Ritenour it may be said in all truth that it is one of the largest and best equipped institutions of its kind in this part of the State. The business is located in front of the Ritenour stables in a two-story brick building, where for 33 years an undertaking business has been established. Two years ago Mr. Ritenour purchased the business from A. Harrington, whom he retained as his funeral director. Mr. Harrington dying, Mr. G. J. Carroll has taken his place. The house not only does a large undertaking business, but it is equipped for preparing bodies for shipment to any portion of the globe. This institution has two of the handsomest funeral cars in North Texas, one being deep black, finished with handsome and costly trimmings, the other is of pure white throughout and finished in the most beautiful style. For the white car a span of beautiful dappled gray horses is used. The livery business with Mr. Ritenour has become a hobby, it fits him naturally, it is his life work, and he understands the business in every detail; in fact, it is hardly probable that there is a better posted liveryman in Grayson or adjoining counties; and not a single animal of worth or a new rig gets out on the streets but what they are at once detected by this man. He thoroughly understands every quality or defect of each animal that he owns, and knowing this, knows how to always avoid buying anything but the very best animals. It is a feast to all lovers of horseflesh to step up to Ritenour's stables and take a look at the many fine animals, the high steppers, the swift trotters, the dashing single-footers, the splendid pacers, and the easy-going family horses of which he is owner. The Ritenour stables are headquarters for fine stock in this portion of Texas; it is the one place that horsemen always center when they have fine animals to sell, for the best horsemen of the state all know Ritenour. His collection of buggies, road wagons, surries, phaetons, hacks and other vehicles are about as swell a lot as one ever cast eye upon outside of the biggest stables of the large cities. Mr. Ritenour makes a specialty of boarding horses, and the only kick the people have ever registered against him is that he sometimes gets their animals too fat. He is one of the biggest buyers of horses and mules in Northern Texas,

frequently shipping them North by the carload. Mr. Ritenour has lived in Sherman for nearly the past quarter of a century and during that time has built up a business worthy of a city many times larger, and is today one among the best "fixed" men in the county. His simple promise to pay is as good as a note endorsed by strong financiers; he is enterprising, energetic and progressive, public spirited and wide-awake to the best interests of the community and takes a deep interest n all affairs that offset the welfare of the people. His business is a credit to the town and he is an honor to its citizenship.
