DENISON
Beautiful Residences - New Gas Works - Cotton Business

Cor. Dallas Commercial
Denison, Sept. 26, 1878.
Your correspondent arrived in the Gate City last night, and through the kindness of Mr. John C. Montgomery we were invited to a seat in his buggy and driven around town this morning. A slight rain made it quite pleasant. I found in my rounds many beautiful residences, and others in process of construction.
The high school is a credit to the city - in fact there is no better school building in the State. The gas works are finished and are paying well. We found the business men in a state of anxiety about the cotton, Denison has not been getting her share this season, the roads leading into the city, they say, are in such a condition that much of the cotton that legitimately belongs to them, has gone elsewhere. The board of trade were in consultation, and will make more efforts in the future to get their share of cotton from that portion of the country.
We visited the North Texas Compress, and through the kindness of Mr. J.P. Rockwell, the superintendent, we learned that their business was far in excess of that of last year. They are receiving heavy shipments of cotton to be compressed before it goes north. They have just added a new Taylor press, weighing about fifteen hundred tons. The old press has a capacity of five hundred bales to the ten hours, making a capacity of eleven hundred bales to every ten hours for the two presses.
In our rounds we entered the Star Store. The proprietor, Mr. Star, has been in Denison about four years. He is now doing a business equal to that of any house in North Texas. Mr. Star carries a very heavy stock of dry goods, clothing, boots, shoes, etc. He has about seventy-five thousand dollars invested in stock.
We dined at the Planters, and thought most everybody else was there. Mr. Lea, the gentlemanly proprietor, had one of his best dinners, and exerted himself to make his guests feel happy. After dinner we had the pleasure of hearing the accomplished Miss Ida Pyle, of Hempstead, perform on the piano. Miss Pyle was stopping at the Planters, and did us the kindness to furnish us as good music as we have been priviledged to hear in the State.
Denison people are always courteous to strangers and make them feel as if the would like to go there often.
