President Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant had served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 - 1877, two terms following the Civil War and the Presidency of Andrew Johnson, who was Vice-President under Abraham Lincoln and served out his term after his assassination.  Grant was the Republican nominee for President in 1868, due to his popularity in the North and his leadership in the Civil War.

President Grant passed through Denison in the fall of 1874.
(Editor's note: The event of the President's visit occured in 1875, not 1894 as stated in the news headline below).

President Grant visited Denison on October 11, 1874.  President Grant had met his friend, General William T. Sherman in Sedalia Missouri and rode the Missouri, Kansas & Texas railroad south through Indian Territory to Denison.  While in town, President Grant visited the Educational Institute. which had just opened that month, and was considered the finest school edifice in Texas.  After complimenting the people of Denison for their advance in the cause of learning, he and General Sherman visited local saloons for a couple of hours before leaving Texas.  (Bryant & Hord.  Two Schools on Main Street, pg. 15)
