I remember when...
Rod, Gun Club Fire Witnessed by Reader
By Charles Mauk
1116 W. Gandy
Denison

Honorable Mention
I remember when the first Rod and Gun Club building burned.  I was reared on my Grandfather Mauk's farm southwest of Rod and Gun.  My brothers and I made our spending money as caddies for the golfers there.  In those days there were no golf carts and everyone walked.
On the day the first clubhouse burned, I was caddy for Dr. Claude Crawford and my brother, Cecil, was Bob Brennon's caddy.  Our golfers had just started to tee off on the No. 9 when my brother cried out for everyone to "look!"
Smoke was rolling up from the vicinity of the clubhouse. Dr. Crawford and Mr. Brennon threw down their clubs and started running toward the fire, callout out for us to meet them there.  By the time Cecil and I had gathered up their clubs and made it to the clubhouse, flames were coming out the windows.
Soon the fire trucks from Denison got there and started pumping the last water to fight the fire.  One of the trucks ran too far out into the lake and its back end sank out of sight.
It was a sad sight to see that beautiful 3-storied clubhouse burn to the ground.  We all cried.
