Edward Guy Garrett, Sr.
Surnames: GARRETT, JACKSON, MCKISSICK, BRANDON, CORNELISON, CAMPBELL, VARNADO, BARTON, BARGANIER, ALBERT, RUSH, EWING, JOHNSON.Edward Guy Garrett, b June 24,1888 at Stranger, Falls County, Texas, d August 29, 1966 in Marlin, Texas and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery there - was a son of James Odell and Elizabeth Ann (Jackson) Garrett, and a grandson of Thomas McKissick and Linea Frances (Brandon - Cornelison) Garrett - natives of Giles County, Tennessee who settled in the Republic of Texas in 1840; and Dr. Thomas and Elizabeth (Campbell) Jackson who married in Audrain County, Missouri and settled in 1851 in Parker County, Texas before moving to Bremond, Robertson County, Texas about 1861.
"Guy" was reared in the Stranger Community, where he attended school. On October 12, 1911, he was married to Hattie Alma Varnado (called "Alma"), b January 26,1888 at Stranger, d April 25, 1953 in Marlin and buried in Calvary Cemetery - natives of Copiah County, Mississippi who settled at Stranger, Falls County, Texas after their marriage. Alma's father died when she and her sister were young children, and she was reared by her step-father, Robert Jasper Garrett, who was a half-brother to Guy's father, James Odell Garrett.
Alma was teaching school at Stranger, but she resigned after her marriage, and she and Guy moved to Marlin to a next door to Alma's family. Guy continued to operate his farming and ranching interests in several locations in Falls County, while rearing their four children. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Marlin. Except for a few years from 1939 to the mid-1940's when they returned to Stranger to live in the Robert Jasper Garrett home, they spent the rest of their lives at their in Marlin.
Edward Guy and Hattie Alma (Varnado) Garrett, Sr. had five children, but only four survived birth.:
Nell Lois Garrett, b June 6, 1914 at Stranger - married Henry Garland Barton and had two children.
Edward Guy Garrett, Jr., b November 11, 1918 in Marlin, Texas - married Velma Price Barganier, and had three children.
Ralph James Garrett, b May 19, 1923 in Marlin, Texas - married Betty Jo Albert, and had three children.
Dick Gordon Garrett, b May 16, 1931 in Marlin, Texas - married Irene Rush, and had four children.
After Alma's death, Guy married second on July 10, 1954 to Mrs. Kathleen (Ewing) Johnson, who had one daughter by her first husband, Gordon L. Johnson. When Edward Guy Garrett, Sr. died, he had accumulated a sizeable estate.
