Bernard Asher Coone

The surname was probably "Kuhn" in Germany, pronounced "Coone" when it was first spelled in America. Since one line of this family uses "Coone" and the others use "Cohn," we must keep in mind that they are the same family.

Bernard (spelled "Behrnard" before it was Amerianized) Asher Coone, b August 30, 1815 in Homberg, Germany, d December 28, 1876 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Taylor's Chapel Cemetery - was mar- ried in 1847 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana to Flora B. Richey, b December 1826 in Alabama, d in 1902 in Falls County and buried by her husband - a daughter of Daniel Boone Richey, Sr., b 1797 in South Carolina, d September 16, 1861, and his wife, Sarah K. (Brown) Richey, b 1810 in Georgia, d September 15, 1871 in Falls County, Texas - buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Bernard came to New Orleans in the 1840's, where he was a merchant. He and Flora had one child, Marcus Henry Coone, b March 25, 1849, who was baptized in the Church of St. Peters for Seamen in the city of New Orleans on April 22, 1849. The Coone family then moved to Rusk County, Texas, where Flora's maternal aunt and her husband, Edward B. and Mary (Brown) Parsons, their son, John Parsons, and Flora's maternal grandfather, David Brown, had already settled. They remained at Henderson, Texas until after 1862, when they migrated into Falls County, where the Richey and Parsons families had relocated in 1859.

On April 5, 1865, Bernard Asher Coone was appointed Postmaster at Marlin, and in 1867 he was elected Justice of the Peace, Precinct I. He was a merchant with a store near Marlin, on present-day FM Road 147. One of his great, granddaughters says that he made two trips to Germany where he had six teaspoons and six tablespoons made of German coins to bring back to his wife, Flora. She still has one of each which were given to her grandfather, Marcus Henry Coone.

Bernard Asher and Flora B. (Richey) Coone had six children:
Marcus Henry Coone, b March 25, 1849 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, d August 14, 1912 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery in Falls County, Texas - married in 1871 to Sarah Addie Oakes, b July 24, 1855 in Falls County, Texas, d June 24, 1928 and buried by her husband - a daughter of Robert Allen and Mary Helen (Ward) Oakes.

Susan Coone, b ca 1850 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, d January 20, 1905 in Falls County, Texas and buried in McClanahan Cemetery - married Lawrence Ferrell and had Lawrence, Paul, Nancy, Oliver, Joseph, and Ida Ferrell.

Sarah Ida Coone, b January 11, 1852 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, d May 21,1919 and buried in McClanahn Cemetery - married May 7, 1868 in Marlin, Texas to James W. Gameson, b October 9, 1845 in England, d June 23, 1923 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery, and had four children: Flora Asenith ("Sinan") Gameson, b April 26, 1869, d December 12, 1908 - married July 18, 1886 to Sam H. Gann, b June 26, 1862, d March 8, 1916 and both buried in McClanahan Cemetery; Frances (Fannie") Gameson, b October 20, 1871, d May 9, 1900 - married July 14, 1887 in Falls County to William H. Hardin, and had four children: Garvy Hardin, b November 21, 1889, d December 2, 1905, Wesley Hardin - married Georgia Burney, "Junie" Hardin - married "Tincy" Umberfield, and Willie Hardin, b April 1, 1900, d May 16, 1900; George ("Bud") Gameson, b December 20, 1873, d August 28, 1958 - married December 25, 1894 to Kate Adams - daughter of Nat Adams; Robert Henry Gameson, b December 8, 1876, d May 12, 1877; and Sarah Ann (Sallie") Gameson, b December 9, 1885 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d August 9, 1968 - married January 1, 1908 in Waco, Texas to J. Troy Loggins, a son of J. C. Loggins of Falls County, Texas.

James R. Cohn (used this spelling instead of "Coone"), b September 9, 1856 in Rusk County, Texas, d March 24, 1926 - married first to Elizabeth Hart and had one son, William Hart Cohn who married Ida (maiden name unknown) and had six children: Ima - married Jesse Ayres, J. R. - no information, W. T. - no information, Alma-who married R. V. Rochell, Ida Mae - married Bill Cook, and Cicero - who married Inez (Blasingame). James R. Cohn married secondly to Amanda C. Casey - had no children, but reared her two nieces, Mary Jo Reed and Louisa Jane ("Lula") Reed who later married two of his brothers.

William M. Cohn (used this spelling instead of "Coone"), b ca 1862 at Henderson, Rusk County, Texas, d in 1946 and buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin - married Louisa Jane ("Lula") Reed - a daughter of John and Eliza (Casey) Reed. They had nine children: Bernard Cohn who married Vera Giddings; John Cohn who married Loy Nichols; James E. Cohn who married Martha Williams and remained in Falls County, Texas; Willie Mae Cohn who married first to Floyd Smith and second to Ollie Rodgers; Flora Addie Cohn who married A. B. Carpenter; Minnie Cohn who married Herman Powell; Elva Jewel ("Bug") Cohn who married Claude Brinkley; Jasper Curtis Cohn who married first to Bobby (Spencer), and second to Nola (maiden name unknown).

Charles Cohn, b February 1, 1870 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d September 22,1931 and buried in an unmarked grave in Taylor's Chapel Cemetery in Falls County - married Mary Jo Reed - daughter of John and Eliza (Casey) Reed.

After the death of Bernard Asher Coone, Flora B. (Richey) Coone married second to Samuel L. Parsons, b 1828 in Alabama, d 1915 and buried in the Stranger Cemetery by his first wife, Caroline V. (Travis) Parsons.
